MIAMI — Coast Guard District Seven disestablished their area command post in response to Hurricane Helene, Tuesday, at Coast Guard Air Station Miami in Opa Locka.

The area command will be re-established if additional Coast Guard support and logistics are needed in response to the storm’s impacts within the Seventh District.

Coast Guard crews responded to multiple search and rescue cases resulting in 21 lives saved or assisted and five pets rescued. These rescues occurred between Wednesday - Monday in Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, Sector Jacksonville, Sector Charleston areas of responsibility and in western North Carolina.

"The Seventh Coast Guard District Area Command team coordinated resources and response efforts as Hurricane Helene made landfall as a category four hurricane impacting Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee with significant winds and rainfall that caused catastrophic flooding and destruction in the southeast United States,” said Capt. Michael Brimblecom, District Seven Hurricane Helene area commander. “Through coordination with federal, state and local partners, we executed search and rescue, marine environmental protection, port recovery and marine safety missions across 12 ports, six sectors, three districts and over 250 counties. The whole of government response under FEMA continues to coordinate resources, personnel and assistance to the impacted American public."

The deployed Coast Guard District Seven assets completed their assigned missions in support of federal, state and local partners. Those personnel and units returned to their respective areas of operation for offshore search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, counter drug, and migrant interdiction operation missions, among others.
