VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Coast Guard suspended its search at noon Sunday for two men off Virginia Beach.
Coast Guard Sector Virginia watchstanders received a report at approximately 8:30 p.m., Saturday of three swimmers in distress near Virginia Beach. Nearly 10 minutes after the initial report one of the swimmers was recovered unconscious on the beach and immediately received medical attention prior to being transported to a local hospital for further care.
The watchstanders issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and launched multiple Coast Guard search and rescue crews along with requesting assistance from local first responders.
The following crews searched:
- Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter
- Coast Guard Station Wachapreague 29-foot Response Boat-Small
- Coast Guard Station Little Creek 45-foot Response Boat-Medium
- USCGC Pompano (WPB 87339)
- Virginia Beach Police and Fire Department marine, land and drone units
- Virginia Marine Resource Commission marine units
Rescue crews searched more than 14 hours, covering 102 square miles in an effort to locate the missing swimmers.
