Coast Guard Reserve Unit U.S. Southern Command holds change of command ceremony

MIAMI — Coast Guard Reserve Unit U.S. Southern Command members held a change of command ceremony, Friday, at U.S. Southern Command’s Conference Center of the Americas in Doral.

During the ceremony, Capt. Michael “Mac” McCarthy transferred command of Coast Guard Reserve Unit U.S. Southern Command to Capt. Tiffany Davidson. Major General Javier A. Reina, deputy commander for mobilization and reserve affairs for United States Southern Command, presided over the ceremony.

McCarthy is transferring to Coast Guard Eighth District Planning and Readiness Division in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he will serve as the senior emergency preparedness liaison officer.

“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the members of the Coast Guard Reserve Unit U.S. Southern Command for their relentless dedication and outstanding work,” said McCarthy. “Their commitment to our mission and resilience in the face of challenges have been truly inspiring. Their efforts set a high standard of excellence and made a significant impact on our operations. As I transition from this role, I carry with me immense pride in what we accomplished together.”

Davidson comes to U.S. Southern Command from the Coast Guard’s Eighth District, where she served as the senior emergency preparedness liaison officer.

“I am deeply honored to lead such a dedicated and talented team,” said Davidson. “Together, we will build on the strong foundation laid by my predecessor, striving to uphold our mission with integrity, innovation and excellence.”

The U.S. Coast Guard Reserve Unit Southern Command supports national security and maritime safety by providing operational and logistical support to Southern Command’s eight joint directorates. This includes conducting missions related to law enforcement, search and rescue, environmental protection and humanitarian assistance. Their work ensures maritime security and readiness in a strategically important region.

The change of command ceremony marks a transfer of total responsibility and authority from one individual to another. It is a time-honored tradition, conducted before the assembled crew, as well as honored guests and dignitaries to formally demonstrate the continuity of the authority within a command.
