MIAMI — The Coast Guard Seventh District disestablished the area command post, Thursday, in response to Hurricane Debby, at Coast Guard Air Station Miami in Opa Locka.
The command post will be re-established if additional Coast Guard support and logistics are needed in response to the storm’s aftermath.
Coast Guard crews responded to a total of four search and rescue cases resulting in two lives saved, 12 lives assisted, and one marine environmental response to a report of a potential pollution incident from damaged infrastructure or vessels. District Seven air station crews flew 29 missions with a total of about 60 hours flown. These rescues and reports occurred between Saturday - Thursday in Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, Sector Jacksonville, Marine Safety Unit Savannah and Sector Charleston areas of responsibility.
"The Seventh Coast Guard District Area Command coordinated resources and response efforts as Hurricane Debby made landfall as a category one storm impacting Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina with significant rainfall and storm force winds that caused heavy flooding and destruction in the southeast United States,” said Capt. Gregory Peck, District Seven Hurricane Debby area commander. “Through exceptional cohesion with federal, state and local partners, we executed search and rescue, marine environmental protection, port recovery and marine safety missions across 12 ports, five sectors, two districts and over 70 counties. This whole of government response ensured the safety of the American public while simultaneously protecting property, the environment and ensuring the flow of commerce through U.S. ports and waterways."
