HONOLULU — The Coast Guard and Hawaii Life Flight medically transported an ailing 58-year-old man from a hospital on Maui, Hawaii, Monday.
Watchstanders at Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) Honolulu received an agency assist request from Hawaii Life Flight and Straub Medical Center personnel after a patient at Maui Memorial Hospital suffered cardiac arrest. Hawaii Life Flight personnel requested the Coast Guard’s assistance with transporting the patient and his extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine.
JRCC watchstanders conferred with the duty flight surgeon, who recommended a medical transport. Watchstanders directed the launch of a Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point HC-130J Super Hercules airplane crew to assist.
Hawaii Life Flight partnered with Straub Medical Center’s ECMO Transport Team in Honolulu to provide advanced critical care for the patient. The Coast Guard aircrew transported the patient to Air Station Barbers Point, where American Medical Response (AMR) personnel then transferred the patient to Straub Medical Center on Oahu.
“Public and private partnerships like these are crucial for patient outcomes in the unique challenges that face Hawaii,” said Jacob Mayer, Hawaii Life Flight/AMR Program Director. “Hawaii Life Flight could not have done this without the successful partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Health, AMR, Straub Medical Center and Maui Memorial Medical Center.”
