HOUSTON — The Coast Guard rescued eight boaters whose vessel began taking on water 40 miles off Galveston, Texas, Tuesday.
Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston command center watchstanders received a call via VHF-FM channel 16 at 4:36 p.m. from a person aboard a 48-foot pleasure craft stating the boat was taking on water with eight adults aboard.
Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and directed the launch of a Coast Guard Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and a Coast Guard Station Galveston 45-foot Response Boat–Medium crew.
Once on scene, the helicopter crew hoisted all eight people and transferred them to Scholes International Airport in Galveston.
No injuries were reported.
Weather conditions at the time of the rescues were 34 mph winds and 8-foot seas.
The boat’s owner will arrange for the vessel’s salvage.
