SAN DIEGO — Coast Guard rescues a 48-year-old mariner and his dog after he became stuck on his 30-foot sailing vessel near the Zuniga Jetty in San Diego, Monday morning.
The mariner contacted Joint Harbor Operations Center watchstanders and requested a tow into San Diego Bay due to adverse weather conditions, compounded by the lack of an onboard radio, means of propulsion, and a critically low cell phone battery. The storm was increasing in complexity, and he was concerned he couldn't wait out the storm in his vessel.
Coast Guard Sector San Diego launched Coast Guard Station San Diego 45-foot Response Boat-medium boatcrew. Upon reaching the scene, the boatcrew discovered no suitable tow points on the vessel. Instead, they safely evacuated the single occupant and his dog, transporting them Shelter Island. No injuries were reported.
