JUNEAU, Alaska –The Unified Command confirmed that the M/V Genius Star XI remains safely anchored in Broad Bay, Alaska, complying with the latest Captain of the Port Order.
The Salvage and Marine Firefighting Team determined the atmosphere inside the affected cargo hold remains non-flammable, indicating no immediate risk of fire. The team used a remote sensing tool to gain the readings and the cargo holds remain sealed.
“The situation is stable right now and maintaining the M/V Genius Star XI at anchor allows for a safer environment for our team to operate and reduces risk of hazardous cargo movement,” said Captain Chris Culpepper, Captain of the Port. “M/V Genius Star XI remains operational and can get underway at a moments’ notice.”
As a precaution, the Unified Command also directed an Emergency Towing System to be on hand if Genius Star XI were to lose propulsion and needed to be towed offshore. That Emergency Towing System will be pre-staged aboard the ship and affixed for rapid use.
The Unified Command consists of the Coast Guard Captain of the Port, Gallagher Marine Systems, and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, who continue to work together in response to this incident.
The one-mile safety zone around the vessel remains in place. Mariners who wish to enter that zone shall request permission on VHF Channel 16.
An investigation into the cause of the fire will take place once response efforts are complete. Information Contacts:
