HOUSTON — The Coast Guard rescued two boaters aboard a disabled, aground vessel near Galveston, Texas, Saturday.

Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders received a phone call from the operator of a 21-foot cuddy cabin at 6:42 p.m. stating his vessel was disabled and had run aground on the North Jetty.

Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and directed the launch of a 45-foot Response Boat–Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Galveston and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Houston.

When the helicopter crew arrived on scene, they hoisted the two boaters and transported them to Scholes International Airport in Galveston. On-scene weather conditions were approximately 4-foot seas with winds of 13-20 mph. No injuries were reported; the vessel’s owner will reportedly arrange for its salvage.

“Being aware of your surroundings is key,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Tahiem Roach, operations unit controller, Sector Houston-Galveston. “Before you go out, consider the tidal conditions and familiarize yourself with any possible hazards in the vicinity.”
