MEDIA AVAILABILITY: Coast Guard Sector North Carolina to hold National Safe Boating Week media event

WHO: Coast Guard Sector North Carolina Response Department Head, Coast Guard Station Oak Island personnel, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina Marine Patrol, Oak Island Water Rescue, Oak Island Fire Department, Wilmington Police Department, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, Southport Fire Department, and Coast Guard Auxiliary.

WHAT: National Safe Boating Week boating safety interviews with Coast Guard Sector North Carolina Response Department Head, Coast Guard personnel and partner agencies and a ride-along for media.

OAK ISLAND, N.C. — Coast Guard Sector North Carolina is scheduled to host a media event Wednesday for National Safe Boating Week at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina.

National Safe Boating Week is a national, annual initiative from May 20 - 26 to urge boaters to refresh their boating safety skills and prepare them for the upcoming boating season.

U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in four out of every five recreational boating fatalities, and that 83 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.

Media attending the event should arrive at Coast Guard Station Oak Island no later than 1:45 p.m.
