KITTY HAWK, N.C. — The Coast Guard, Maritime Administration (MARAD), North Carolina Emergency Management, Virginia Emergency Management, and Virginia Department of Environmental Quality will be conducting a multi-agency oil spill preparedness exercise Wednesday and Thursday in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
The Coast Guard, alongside state and local partners in North Carolina and Virginia, will test and strengthen inter-agency cooperation and enhance their capabilities to accomplish shared objectives in response to a simulated major maritime incident. The exercise scenario will include a vessel collision with a submerged object approximately 40 miles off the coast of the Virginia-North Carolina border releasing 226,800 gallons of heavy oil.
