US Coast Guard Cutter Alert transfers from Astoria, Oregon, arrives at new home port in Cape Canaveral, Florida

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla — U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Alert (WMEC 630) and its crew arrived at their new home port of Cape Canaveral, June 10, 2024. Alert began the eastward journey in May after concluding 30 years of service while homeported in Astoria, Oregon, along the Pacific Northwest’s Columbia River. Over the course of the 30-day, 6,000 nautical mile transit, Alert crossed the equator, transited the Panama Canal, and responded to search and rescue cases. Marking a new era, Alert rendered honors to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter David Duren (FRC 1156), a fast response cutter transiting northbound to Astoria to relieve Alert’s watch in the Pacific Northwest.

MEDIA AVAILABILITY: Fifth Coast Guard District to hold change-of-command ceremony 

The Fifth Coast Guard District is scheduled to hold a Change-of-Command ceremony Wednesday at Coast Guard Base Portsmouth.  Rear Adm. John “Jay” Vann will assume the duties and responsibilities of the Fifth Coast Guard District from Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath. Vice Admiral Nathan Moore, commander of Coast Guard Atlantic Area, will be the presiding official over the ceremony.

Coast Guard to provide safety during Dali transit from Baltimore to the Port of Virginia

The Coast Guard will oversee the safe and secure voyage of the motor vessel Dali Monday, as it transits to the Port of Virginia from the Port of Baltimore, where it has remained since the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the early hours of March 26.  During the transit, the Coast Guard Cutter Sailfish, an 87-foot Marine Protector-class patrol boat homeported in Virginia Beach, will provide a 500-yard safety zone around the Dali while Coast Guard watchstanders at command centers in the Fifth Coast Guard District, in Portsmouth, Virginia, Sector Maryland-National Capital Region and Sector Virginia will closely monitor the ship’s movement as it transits through each captain of the port zone.

U.S. Coast Guard rescues 13 boaters near Guam

SANTA RITA, Guam — U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam, demonstrating preparedness and efficiency, successfully conducted a search and rescue operation for a distressed vessel 13 nautical miles north of Guam on June 23, 2024, saving 13 boaters. This successful rescue operation, a testament to the power of collaboration, underscores the critical importance of our partnerships and the vital role of proper safety measures at sea. Lt. Chelsea Garcia, the operation's search and rescue mission coordinator, highlighted, "Even with good weather conditions, having 13 people on a 23-foot boat can be risky. Our seamless collaboration with Guam Fire Rescue and other agencies ensured a swift and effective response. This incident highlights the necessity of having reliable communication devices and lifejackets aboard, as they can make all the difference in emergencies."

US Coast Guard Cutter Dauntless celebrated for 56 years’ service during heritage recognition ceremony

NAVAL AIR STATION PENSACOLA, Fla. — The Coast Guard held a heritage recognition ceremony, Friday, in Pensacola to honor the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Dauntless (WMEC 624) and recognize its 56 years of exemplary service. The ceremony was presided over by Vice Adm. Nathan Moore, Atlantic Area commander, and served to celebrate Dauntless’ contributions to the service and Nation in the presence of cutter leadership, current and former crew members, families and friends.
