U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy arrives in Seattle following scientific research, onboard fire

SEATTLE — U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB 20) arrived in Seattle Friday after conducting scientific research in the Pacific sector of the Arctic Ocean in support of the Arctic Observing Network, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). Healy’s crew and embarked researchers conducted more than 150 conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) casts to investigate the circulation and properties of the water, monitored for signs of harmful agal blooms, and collected observations on marine mammals and birds in the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas.

US Coast Guard, Arctic partner nations hold Operation Nanook pre-sail conference in Nova Scotia, Canada

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — The U.S. Coast Guard, Royal Canadian and Royal Danish navies held a pre-sail conference in Nova Scotia’s capital city of Halifax, Monday, in preparation for Operation Nanook. Operation Nanook is the signature Canadian-led exercise that highlights respective nations’ ability to cooperate in the Arctic to address emergent threats and enforce international maritime regulations.

Coast Guard Barque Eagle returns home after 97-day summer deployment

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The U.S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle (WIX 327) returned to its home port of New London, Thursday following a 97-day deployment. Over the past three months, the crew trained U.S. Coast Guard Academy cadets and visited nine ports, including six foreign countries, acting as a goodwill ambassador for the United States and Coast Guard.

Coast Guard reopens U.S. Virgin Islands seaports, lifts daylight restrictions for Puerto Rico seaports

The Coast Guard set Port Condition FOUR, Thursday afternoon, reopening maritime ports in the U.S. Virgin Islands with the exception of Fredriskted port in St. Croix, which remains closed under Port Condition ZULU pending further assessments. Daylight restrictions for the ports in Puerto Rico have been lifted, all port facilities and navigable waterways in this jurisdiction may resume normal operations. “We appreciate all of the coordination efforts carried out between Coast Guard personnel and our port, government and industry partners in Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands that allowed for the prompt opening and the resumption of maritime commerce in both jurisdictions,” said Capt. Luis Rodriguez, commander of Sector San Juan and Captain of the Port for Puerto and the U.S. Virgin Islands. “We are still actively conducting assessments to reopen the remaining port of Fresdriksted in St. Croix, which remains closed under Port Condition ZULU until further notice.”

Coast Guard reopens Puerto Rico seaports following Tropical Storm Ernesto, seaports in U.S. Virgin Islands remain closed pending assessments

The Coast Guard set Port Condition FOUR, Thursday, reopening maritime ports in Puerto Rico restricted to daylight operations in the navigable waterways only, while all other ports in the U.S. Virgin Islands remain closed under Port Condition Zulu, following the passing of Tropical Storm Ernesto. All other seaports in the U.S. Virgin Islands remain closed under Port Condition ZULU until further notice. Coast Guard port assessment teams continue working with port partners and the maritime industry to finalize navigable waterway assessments to reopen these ports as soon as possible. “The Coast Guard continues to work closely with our port partners and the maritime industry in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico to finalize required assessments and ensure that the waterways are safe to reopen the remaining ports in the U.S. Virgin Islands and resume normal port operations throughout our area of responsibility,” said CAPT Luis Rodriguez, Commander of Sector San Juan and Captain of the Port for Puerto and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
